HAND CREAMS GALORE!

As crafters, it can be really irritating to drag yarn across dry, callused skin. I really have the triple threat of bad skin: naturally dry as a redhead, family history of eczema and I live in a strange climate. Oh, and I'm a musician.

So here are some of the hand creams and moisturisers I've been loving lately...

I currently have this sitting in my craft bag for emergencies and it is just divine. The pomegranate scent is gorgeous, I never want to stop smelling my hands afterwards! It's thick, absorbs quickly and that little bit of SPF is great to prevent aging, since I think most of us probably forget about our hands when we slip, slop, slap!

I couldn't make it through this list without a second Natio product. The Orange Blossom line is just perfect for Spring/Summer and the body butter in particular will leave you smelling sweet and fresh. I've also tried the handwash and the body lotion from this line and they are equally lovely.

While this isn't technically a hand cream, and Anatomicals do have hand creams in their range, it does do the job. If you're looking for something less thick than your typical hand cream, this might be the choice for you. The cherry scent reminds me the millions of cherry lip balms I had as a kid and I just love the packaging. We also have Silly Twits Ignore Their Mits handsoap in our kitchen!

This is definitely my no-nonsense go-to for dryness. It isn't scented, it's affordable, it's extremely thick (seriously, tip that tub upside down, it's not going anywhere!) and it does the job. I like to keep a tub next to my bed during the winter months and slap a thick coat over my feet before putting on socks for bed so I can wake up to soft, touchable feet.

This suggestion actually comes from husband (I have a lavender allergy) and is the most expensive on the list, but as with most Lush products, the reviews are amazing. From what I can tell, it's smooth, soothing and relaxing and though it says body lotion, it was recommended for my husband's dry hands.

While on the topic of husbands, his hands look like he works in a mine all day (he doesn't). If you're having trouble with super dry, callused hands, you might give this skin oil a go, which was suggested by our local pharmacy. You won't be able to touch anything for half an hour, but it gets the job done and is made from all natural oils including coconut, rose hip and lavender.

BONUS SUGGESTION - BLACK PEACOCK SOAPERY
It can be really difficult to find soap that doesn't leave your hands feeling like some took a straw and sucked all the moisture out of them (I know, weird imagery). My parents bought me five of these hand soaps from Black Peacock Soapery and I was pleasantly surprised. We've been making our way through Pure Goddess, which is yang ylang, sweet orange, white grapefruit and patchouli scented and until the cold hit, I didn't need to moisturise afterwards at all.

Do you have a preferred hand cream or are you blessed with naturally soft skin?

MEDIAS MONDAY - METRIC.

I don't know how I first stumbled across METRIC. I've had a lone Emily Haines & The Soft Skeleton song in my iTunes for years (presumably from a time when I would desperately browse the similar artists page of last.fm) but didn't realise it was the same vocalist for years.
I knew the song was Help I'm Alive, or at least an acoustic rendition of the track. Naturally it appealed to my desire to extend my guitarist repertoire. When I turned to the album, Fantasies and it's follow-up, Synthetica, which was released around the time I discovered the band), but something didn't connect. I latched onto a small handful of songs but the bands synth/new wave elements were mostly lost on me.
Still, those few tracks would regularly make it onto playlists. A few weeks ago I decided to add another of those songs to my guitar repertoire - Sick Muse (above). While looking up the track on Spotify, I discovered Metric had released an acoustic EP of seven songs from Fantasies. There was the Metric that had originally appealed to me.

When I went back to listen to Fantasies and Synthetica again, it was a very different experience. Being that much more familiar with Haines' writing from those acoustic songs and having fallen in love with similar Canadian act, STARS, I've just fallen in love with them for the first time.
Haines' writing is touching - when (re)listening to Synthetica, I was immediately grabbed by the opening line (I'm just as f***ed up as they say, I can't face the day time). Haines easily delves into the dangers of fame, monogamy and potential of self without becoming convoluted. The melding of indie rock/pop, synth and new wave is well-crafted and radio worthy.

It wasn't until doing some research for this article that I released Metric had been around long before the release of Fantasies; since 1998 in fact. I haven't explored their first three efforts just yet - I'm enjoying Fantasies and Synthetica for now and looking to their new release.
The band is currently touring the US and Canada.

OOTD - AUTUMN HAS ARRIVED.

Seasons are a really strange thing in Australia. I'm yet to live somewhere where one or more seasons aren't unnaturally long or short or don't suddenly appear. Despite being almost two months into autumn, it has definitely only just started to actually feel cold here.

After months of skirts and shorts, I am super excited to slip on jeans, boots and scarves again. I wore this outfit to lunch with a friend last week and felt so much more like myself than I had in ages.

Sorry for the mirror selfie - the weather has not been cooperating!

The jacket was bought on ebay late last season, advertised as being brand new and asos brand. It is neither of those things but fortunately for me, khaki jackets seem to be the trend this season.

The whole thing is inspired by this look Nina Gordon was rocking for most of the Veruca Salt 2014 tour.

JACKET - ebay (similar similar similar similar
TSHIRT - Veruca Salt tour shirt (not available online)
BOOTIES - Samira by Instep

Is everybody else loving the sudden cold weather?

UPDATE: The It's Holy tee is now available in black on the Veruca Salt online store.

MEDIA MONDAYS - FLASH FIVE.

Rather than full reviews, here are five sneak peeks into media I've been taking in lately!

FILM - HOME
Almost two weeks ago, I took my little sister to see Home, starring the voice talents of Dr Sheldon Cooper Jim Parsons and Rhianna. If you aren't already familiar with it, Home is the story of an alien named Oh whose race - rather than face their enemies - invade other planets. Naturally, Earth is next where Oh meets a young girl named Tip who teaches him about family, friendship  and bravery. LS (who is twelve) was concerned she would be too old for the film and I'll admit, the intended audience is probably more in the 3-8 range. There isn't a whole lot for adults or big kids here but it's still cute and amusing.

MUSIC - FROOT
I was first introduced to Marina and the Diamonds by my mother, who sent me the spectacular video for Mowgli's Road. At the time, I wasn't really into pop music but there's something about Marina's lyrics that really hit home for me, especially on tracks like Are You Satisfied? and Obsessions. It took me much longer to warm up to her second effort, Electra Heart, which is much more electropop-inspired. So when Froot was announced and Marina said this was a more positive but more band-oriented album, I was torn (not that I'm anti-happy music). It's growing on me but I'm finding the chorus' to be a little cliché and lacking variety. You'll see what I mean...
TELEVISION - THE UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT
As a huge fan of the US version of The Office, I was super excited to see Ellie Kemper starring in her own show... until I realised it was a Netflix Original Series. Then Netflix Australia happened (though it hasn't been without issue) and it was the first thing on my list. Naturally we marathoned the show over two days. The concept of someone from the past trying to survive 21st Century technology and lingo isn't exactly new but it's done fabulously here and the cast is fantastic, with Kemper, Jane Krakowski and creator Tina Fey proving once again that women are more than capable of comedy. If you haven't already, definitely check it out!
BOOKS - FREE TO GOOD HOME
I'm currently about halfway through Catherine Deveny's 2009 effort, Free To Good Home, which is a collection of her writings for The Age. For those of you unfamiliar with Deveny, she is an Australian writer and stand-up comic who definitely isn't one to shy away from controversy, with her own website toting her as a "Maverick, Vigilante and Non-Fuck Giver". I bought this because of the Marieke Hardy quote on the cover and my penchant for books by funny ladies musing about life and regretted my decision about four pages in. Even after the parts that made me decide this woman doesn't care about my happiness, only about the subverting patriarchy, it was all Melbourne this and child-rearing that, which bores me. I'll be surprised if I finish it.
YOUTUBE - BUFFY STUNT FOOTAGE
If you're a fan of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, behind-the-scenes footage and/or stunt coordination, keep reading. I discovered a few days ago that not everybody is aware of Jeff Pruitt - the stunt coordinator for Buffy seasons 2-4 - and his marvelous contribution to YouTube, which includes a whole host of videos from his time on Buffy and a few from Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The videos feature Pruitt's wife, Sophia Crawford, who played Buffy's double from seasons 1-4. I know for some people seeing behind-the-scenes footage can wreck their viewing experience but if you're like me, you love knowing how everything works! Check out this footage from The Wish below...

PROJECT - SOPHIE'S UNIVERSE.

A couple of months ago, I tidied up my stash. To give you a bit of an idea, most of my yarn lives in a reasonably sized box under the bed and most of it is 8ply acrylic for amigurumi crafting. When I stopped making amis... well, you can imagine.

Somehow I stumbled upon Lattes and Llamas' Geek-A-Long. It seemed like a great way to clear out some of that stash yarn. Unfortunately my first "square" came out more chunky, ugly rectangle and I abandoned the project after less than one and a half squares.
It's starting to get difficult to find places to photograph such a large piece.
